How to read with DysReader

Choose a story or paste your own text. The reading window shows a small group of words at a time. You control how fast the words change.

Choose a level

The stories range from Kindergarten through Grade 8. The levels help you find a starting point; they are not a reading test. Begin with a story you can follow and move between levels whenever you wish.

Use the reading window

  1. Open a story with “Read”.
  2. Open “Reading settings” if you want a slower speed.
  3. Press “Start”. Press “Pause” to stop the words changing.
  4. Use “Back” and “Next” to move one word group at a time. Use the reading position slider to find a particular place.

When the reading window has keyboard focus, the space bar starts or pauses reading. The left and right arrow keys move back or forward. Reading pauses when you switch to another browser tab or window.

Adjust speed and display

“Words per minute” sets the basic speed. Pauses after punctuation can make the actual pace slower. The starting speeds are suggestions, not performance targets. You can choose larger text, a different background, or up to five words per step.

Press “Show full text” to open the story below the reading window. The preview lets you read at your own pace and print the story.

Save your progress

DysReader saves your reading position on this device when you pause and while you read. You can also press “Save progress”. Open “My progress” to return to a saved story. Browser storage restrictions can prevent saving. Your own texts stay only on the open page.

English and German reading histories are separate. Switching languages does not replace your saved positions in the other language.

Read together

After a short passage, describe what happened. If the meaning is unclear, read the passage again or slow the pace. You can also open the full text and talk about it together.
